Garissa 20th to 25th February 2007 Back to 2007 page

In 1963 there was a major border dispute between Somali and Kenya.  We were told that Garissa was once in Somali.  Today Somalia is associated with drought and war, suffering and starvation.  In January of 2007 the US carried out air strikes supposedly targeting al-Qaeda personal hiding in Southern Somalia.  Surely it would be impossible to preach an open air Gospel meeting in Somalia – The next best thing then is to preach in Garissa a town full of Somali people.

A time to Sow  The seed of the Gospel went out night after night without any incident of violence. Many folk too afraid to attend the meetings hid in the thick bush surrounding the site and listened.  The powerful sound also carried far into many homes.  We may not have seen the town turn out in mass but I believe with all my heart that a great harvest will result in the future. The seed has been sown and The gospel will make a difference and will never return void.

Practical Help to the suffering  Food that was kindly supplied by New life Mission Norway, was distributed to a kindergarten and an orphanage.  The pastors shared with us that many church families were struggling so we were able to supply  sacks of rice to each church to distribute to needy families.  Thank you for your kindness shown to the people of Garissa.

Pastors Seminars  “Greatly encouraged” was a phrase we heard over and over.  Several testified how they were worn out and about to give up due to the harsh conditions.  But God imparted courage and strength.  All the leaders testify how the Lord lifted them.  Many men and woman called to the town are more determined than ever to pray and keep on working till they see a change.  Several partners gave books and literature that we were able to give out to the leaders which was a further encouragement.
